A New Look for the 2026 Crew

The Tokyo Yamathon Volunteer Crew shirt is back with a fresh design for 2026.

Inspired partly by the 2025 shirt, this year’s design combines Tokyo railway culture, retro Japanese graphics and the unmistakable character of the Yamanote Line.

It is bold, playful and easy to spot—which is useful when thousands of walkers are looking for someone who knows where they should be going.

Designed by Lakeland University Japan Internship.

The 2026 shirt was an updated design by Justinian Legg, a Graphic Design Intern with Lakeland University Japan.

Justinian was introduced to the Tokyo Yamathon project by our own Volunteer Director Jessica McDonald. He then took the idea forward, rebuilding and developing the artwork in Adobe Illustrator and preparing it for screen printing.

From the train and typography to the Japanese text and small visual details, Justinian gave the shirt its own distinctive 2026 personality.

Tokyo with a Retro Twist

The design features bold lettering, railway-inspired artwork and Japanese elements including トーキョーヤマソン and 山手線一周, reflecting the challenge of completing one circuit of the Yamanote Line.

The overall look feels somewhere between a vintage Tokyo travel poster and the promotional artwork for a wonderfully strange Showa-era adventure film.

In other words, it fits the Yamathon rather well.

More Than a Shirt

Our volunteers welcome participants, provide directions, support event operations and solve the unexpected problems that inevitably appear on event day. The crew shirt makes them easy to identify, but it also represents the time and energy they contribute to making the Tokyo Yamathon possible. It is a badge of participation—and proof that supporting your community does not mean you cannot look good while doing it.
